Amicus Briefs or a "friend of the court", brief refers to a party, not involved in the case, who volunteers to offer information on a point of law or some other aspect of the case to assist the court in deciding a matter before it. When appropriate, FSC offers assistance to adult entertainment court cases in the form of amicus briefs.
Michael Williams
After our major Supreme Court victory in Ashcroft v. Free Speech Coalition, Congress rewrote the two provisions struck down in that case. A lower federal court then struck down one of the rewritten provisions in a case in which FSC was not involved. After the Supreme Court agreed to hear the case about the rewritten provision, FSC filed a friend of the court (amicus) brief in the Supreme Court in order to preserve important aspects of our earlier victory. Sherri Williams
Several states still have laws banning the sale of sex toys. For many years, Sherri Williams battled Alabama’s law in federal court, repeatedly succeeding in the trial court but getting turned back in the appellate court. Eventually, her lower court appeals and remands ran out, and she sought help from the Supreme Court. FSC again wrote a friend of the court brief urging the Supreme Court to take her case.
