We were disgusted to hear this morning about Nathan Larson, a candidate running as independent in Virginia’s 10th congressional district. Larson is a white supremacist who, among other things, advocates for the rights of spousal abuse, incest and child rape, and the legalization of child pornography.
“Women are objects,” he once wrote, “to be taken care of by men like any other property, and for powerful men to insert themselves into as it pleases them, and as they believe will be in women’s own interests. In most cases, their interests are aligned, as long as the man is strong. Female sex-slaves actually get a much better deal than animals, because in most cases, they are allowed to reproduce, unlike animals raised for meat or companionship.”
We shouldn’t have to say that we find his views abhorrent. We are and have always been opposed to child pornography, to non-consensual sexual behavior, to coercion and exploitation.
But, unfortunately, we live in a time when we see conservatives and religious leaders willingly conflate views like his with the legal, consensual sex work.
Rather than blaming the workers of the adult film industry for views like this, anti-porners would be better off looking at the groups the man himself aligns with — anti-feminists, white supremacists, and those who opposed the Violence Against Women Act, a law he seeks to repeal.
We know there is little likelihood of Larson would be win, but we would hope that Governor Northam and the other good people of the Commonwealth of Virginia would refuse to seat him.
In the effort to stop exploitation, violence and child pornography, the adult industry stands as allies.
