FSC CEO Diane Duke traveled to London this week as an invited speaker at the Oxford Union’s formal Thursday evening debates. The debates have a prestigious history going back to 1823 and have hosted speakers including British prime ministers, heads of state, celebrities and recognized authorities. This week’s debate topic was Sex Worker Rights. The description of the debate read, “Historically, sex work has failed to be regarded as a legitimate career choice in western liberal societies. Whilst many would argue that the stigmatization of sex has led to the marginalization of a population within society, others see the sex industry as one which profits from exploitation and the objectification of human bodies. Should sex work be regarded as having the same value as more 'traditional' or 'conventional' professions?” Proponents for sex worker rights included Duke, former Manwin owner Fabian Thylmann, and International Union of Sex Workers activist Catherine Stephens. Speaking in opposition: Dr. Brunskell-Evans, founding member of Resist Porn Culture, Dr. Finn McKay, founder of London Feminist Network, and attorney Sarah O’Brien, trustee of Stop Demand. “We were very well-received,” said Duke after the debate. “Our opposition was tough, but clearer heads prevailed and we won the debate.” In March 2014, Duke also was invited to the UK to argue against censorship and increasing online regulation at a roundtable discussion sponsored by Virgin Media. FSC is proud to represent a pro-adult industry voice to legislators, media and the public on a national and global level.
